I have a tying tip that has helped me a lot.
When trying to finish the head on a fly, instead of
using a hackle guard, I use a small piece of plastic
tubing. I cut the tubing about an inch long, and cut
a slit the full length, so it can slip over the hook.
That way it continues in the same direction and does
not damage the hackle. Different size tubes can be
used for different sized flies or hooks. It holds
the hackle back very well, and does not damage at
all, and helps to finish the head well. Apply head
cement before taking the tubing off.
Try it! ~ Ron
