hook - Dai Riki 135 #10
thread - MFC 6/0 purple
core - 12lb mono
tail/underbody - moose body hair
rib - Krystal Flash pearl
abdomen - 2mm foam purple
wing - Congo Hair white
hackle - grizzly/brown
thorax -dubbing purple


Part 1

put a loop in the end of a piece of mono; tie it in






measure (2x hook, plus gap width) some moose body; tie in/trim butts






tie in KF




hook mono onto the gallows; wrap hair and KF up the core and back down




trying a different sequence for body construction here
apply Super Glue at base of tail




pull tapered strip of foam against body at base of tail




under tension, wrap tag end down the underbody; tie off/trim

Part 2


brush on Super Glue and wrap other end of foam, adjusting spacing/tension to create a tapered body




rib KF; tie off/trim, clip mono




tie in a hank of CH in a loop




hook the loop in the gallows, post up (looped like this, it keeps the fibers evenly divided and easier to post)




cut loop, sub-post each wing






tie in hackle, shiny side out




dub thread/dub thorax; finish at base of post

wrap hackle, cup-side up down the post; capture tips with thread wrap at base of post






half hitch x 2 at base of post, SHHAN, trim wing

Scott,
You have done a wonderful job on this fly. What is the genesis of the purple haze? Is this just another pretty attractor fly? Has anybody actually fished it effectively? Not trying to be cute here.

The Purple Haze was created by Andy Carlson of Hamilton, Montana, a guide on the Bitterroot, back around 2000. For whatever reason, purple seemed to attract the trout's attention and he started tying Parachute Adams in that color, eventually using spandex-like material (Sexi-floss, Spaniflex, etc) for the bodies. It's been a great fly for years, as an attractor and in various incarnations very effective during a number of hatches, including baetis.
I've had real good luck with them on the Clark Fork and other streams in Montana.

I know a number of fishermen who won't use a fly if it isn't purple. I have not tried them yet but plan on tying some up and giving them a serious test this year. This one is as good if not better than any I've seen.
