I'm not a casting expert, but from what you are saying it sounds like you need to slow down your casting stroke if you feel out of control. You need to feel the action of the rod and adjust from there. I would think that because it is a shorter rod than what you are use to, you need to let the line catch up with the rod and slowing down your stroke should help.
