There was a time in the past when I planned to acquire a new fly rod every year, and did so. I still have a small number of those rods including ones that I got 30 or more years ago and haven't fished in ages, but knowing that I'd probably never actually fish more than a few rods I began disposing of my collection a decade or so ago.

I still buy a new rod from time to time (and reels too), and I still have some surplus ones to dispose of, but I find that a half dozen or so rods, reels and lines cover all my fishing pretty well. In fact, I fish in Montana practically every day each year from mid-May to early October with just 3-4 rods. This includes lakes, small streams and large rivers, fishing wets, dries and streamers.
