LOL, boo is tough I don't care what anyone tells you, it will take a lickin' and keep on castin'. People think it's namby pamby because they only think of boo as short light delicate dry fly rods.... give me an 8wt boo and I'll show you the carp that will bend it to the handle, but they will come to hand.

Wonder if that is the Steamboat area...??
Rumor has it a lake spilled over into the river there and now the river has a good population of pike....that feast on trout . Went skiing there and took my fly rod. Caught a few trout. Nothing to write home about(what I caught).

All I could think is that I would not like to see pike in that stream. I woulda killed and ate that sucker, just to get it out of the trout stream.

Of course you can. I fish bamboo fly rods frequently and have caught fish as big as 28 inch channel catfish. Like someone said in an earlier post, they were catching fish this big long before synthetic materials were developed.

I would venture that my 5/6 weight small stream bamboo can handle more than any 5/6 weight graphite out there. Last 3lb+ large mouth I caught on it didn't even get it working hard. Remember that rod makers specifically build boo rods to bend, not break if handled properly.

In the past lots of big pike were caught on bamboo rods with drawn gut leaders to boot. I think this would have occured often in trophy trout places like the Nipagon River in the 30s and 40s. It once was a place my uncle visited like Mecca back then. Back He would have tossed that snake in the bush pronto since there were few things as frustrating as finding out he had a 30" pike instead of a trophy Brookie. It is a good sign that we appreciate the "snake" an a true trophy today.
