BURNS, Ore. -- Biologists are working on a plan to poison a popular trout lake in Eastern Oregon to remove goldfish that are taking over. But first they need volunteers to catch the trout so they can be restocked after the poisoning. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said Tuesday it plans to use the chemical rotenone to kill all the fish in Mann Lake at the base of Steens Mountain.Mann Lake has long been a popular trout fishing destination, but in 2001 someone apparently used live goldfish for bait and things have gotten worse from there. The trout have declined, and fishermen are catching goldfish up to 13 inches long.A public meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. May 12 at department offices in Burns."If all goes well, Mann Lake should recover quickly and anglers could be fishing for trophy-sized trout by 2012," said Shannon Hurn, an ODWF district biologist. The fish will be held in a nearby pond and placed back into Mann Lake once re-stocking begins.
