Keep in mind that Bennett will be catch and release only at that time and you can only fish Friday through Monday. It's a great time to fish it though as the crowds are much smaller.

The North Fork of the White River is an amazing river. This probably doesn't pass the Kansas City test, but we've had a great time here: http://www.riveroflifefarm.com/
Bedlam,
The Intl. House of Prayer (IHOP) is just east of one of the KC lakes stocked in November for the winter trout season. It's a Conservation lake named Alex George lake.

It's not the best lake for fly casting as there are only a few spots with room to cast. But, I've caught trout a few times from there. There are no amenities at the lake and the facilities are a his/hers concrete outhouse. It's what I would call nearly primitive. Success depends on the trout.
I can't recommend any specific lodgings in that area, and personally- I wouldn't lodge around there. You could go into Independence to stay. Just a 15-20 min drive north. Also, east to Lee's Summit - about 15-20 min.
For family time, there's the Christmas lights on the Country Club Plaza http://www.countryclubplaza.com/, fairly easy to get to.
The Truman home in Independence is easy to find, but is closed to tours this winter. http://www.nps.gov/hstr/index.htm
The Truman Presidential Library is just a little way north from the home. http://www.trumanlibrary.org/
Kansas City has a very nice art museum, the Nelson-Atkins. http://www.nelson-atkins.org/ There are some nice places to shop, including the Country Club Plaza. http://www.visitkc.com/index.aspx

Hope this might help a bit. Don't expect too much out of Alex George lake. KC isn't a big draw for anglers.

Jesus still hangs out with fishermen.
I know this isnt going to put you very close to any trout for early morning fishing..
BUT... Id look into somewhere around the Stockton area..
warm water....
about equal distance to Bennett.. Roaring River.. KC.. Taneycomo.. and about a another hour to Montauk... 3 state park and a lake..
youd be set about 2 hour drive to any of the following..
Plus Stockton has some AMAZING walleye and smallie fishing.. and yes you can catch eyes' on a fly
From personal experience.. Stockton is Beautiful.

Here is my favorite website to research it. I lived in MO for the last 5 years and just recently moved to GA. check this site out if you want good research.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am sorting through all the places and running them past my wife. We are trying to decide how far we want to go. Three little kids in the car makes 7 hours seem like 14. If we can get within a couple hours of KC, we would be fine. We would sneak up to IHOP for a day, then back to wherever we are staying for the remainder of the time.
I am thinking south of KC.
What about the Branson area? Lots for my wife and kids to do I would imagine, but how is the fishing?
the fishing is going to suck for a couple of day..
They just open all ten flood gates on Table Rock dam today..
the other day we got about 8-10inches of rain in less then 36 hour.. MAJOR FLOODING!!
but we all goes well we could see a big shad kill .. and this should bring up some VERY massive browns for the fall spawn....
on another note..
I would have told him Branson too... I live there.. but.
he want somewhere close to KC without long hours in the car with the kids...
** and I dont blame him a bit***
I would have to say Stockton is right in the middle of everything

It depends on how you plan to get to KC from Jackson, MS.......Route through St. Louis, you wont be near any trout fishing....If you head up through Rolla or Springfield youll have more to choose from. The parks will be closed during the week for the most part...open Friday-Monday after the second week of November...but you might try to hit the Current near Montauk State Park, Cabin rentals and tent camping are available in the park...Another idea...the North Fork of the White around Dora, MO check out River of Life Farm or Sunburst Ranch, or stop at Rainbow Trout and Game Ranch in Rockbridge, MO. Or stop in Mountain Home on your way. Have a great trip.
