    Chris,

This is the TRUE version. First fly fishing expedition. Didn't know nuttin' obviously. Tied on some gad awful made in (insert country here) fly. Caught a 14" brookie right out of the box. Was estatic. In the next thirty minutes then proceeded to have one "take" after another and just couldn't seem to hook a one. Finally decided to check my fly. Point was broken off at the bend probably after catching on some of the big clumps of grass in this particular stream. So since then my excuse is "The point was broken off." My regular fishing buddy chuckles whenever he hears that line.

Watched a buddy from Sweden on Penns Creek one day. He was making these awesome hero casts with perfect drifts to massive browns slurping flies underneath some Hemlocks on the far bank. A sight to behold. Set the hook on nine fish. Each time he set the hook, the fly flew back at him. He finally checked the fly. A wind knot had formed a loop behind the fly, the loop caught the bend of the hook, so every time he set it, it pulled the point away from the fish.
"Nine ....'en fish! NINE!" Heard that all week.

    fcch,

I recall reading(?) about a fly fishing president who had a trip planned to a famous stream. A day or two prior to his anticipated arrival, the stream was stocked and sealed off from fishermen so the president would be sure to catch trout. I think the story went on that the president was not able to make the trip.

So maybe that guide was onto something.

Just as he walks up cut the bend off your hook tell him it is a new rod and you are just getting use to it. Tell him it is a practice fly and show it to him.
That will make him move a long distance away from you and be silent about moving off. He might look at you sideways but he will move. It helps is you open your eyes wide while telling this tale.

    I pulled this a couple times ...

    him: catchin any ?
    me : yup

    him: on what ?
me : end of my line

    him: what 'cha using ?
    me : a hook

Most people who ask, stop here and figugre out I'm keeping my lips sealed. A couple pressed it.

Never did this to a fly fisher ... they never seem to ask ........

Ain't nobody ever ask me, seems people, like fish, tend to stear clear of me when I'm on the water.

(I'm still try to find an antidote for VFR)
