W. Palm Beach, Fla. This weekend

I will be fishing for a few hours this weekend from a Kayak on the intercoastal and on the ocean side. I'll be off the McArthur state park in North Palm Beach. There are flats on the intercoastal and then the ocean.

What kind of fish should I be expecting and any fly or other suggestions?

Funny that you should post this: the only saltwater fly fishing I've ever done was for 2 hours at McArthur state park.

If I were you, considering the time of year, I might skip the other spots, and concentrate my time on the state park. There is along bridge that goes over the lagoon there, and if you stand on the bridge for a while you can see the fish underneath you.

When I was there (New Years eve) I just walked the large lagoon flat near the bridge. A white and chartruse clouser minnow caught me 3 seatrout and a couple of snook, in just two hours. From the bridge you could see alot of redfish, seatrout, sheepshead and snook. I hear that small tarpon are also in there, but closer to the place where the highway crosses over the lagoon.

It's a swell spot. Around sundown, the fish were going crazy.

Friday 6:00 AM Went down to the beach in Boynton wanting to fish the surf. 30 knot winds blowing squarely into my face.

Here are some trueisms for saltwater fishing.
1- It is always colder than you think
2- The wind is always blowing from the direction you want to cast
3- The wind never drops below 20 knots until you return to port or start walking off the beach

Boy do I like saltwater fishing
I'll probably try the same thing again tomorrow. I must be a glutten for punishment.

I tried the surf at McArthur when I was there on New Year's, and had a miserable time. The lead eyes on all of my clousers got destroyed.

Isn't it too cold for the surf?

Too cold for me or the fish?

I don't know, and if I catch anything that way then I'll pass on the answer.
