You would do well to consider the Ross Rythym or Cimmaron. Both are excellent reels, and considering their attributes I believe they are very reasonably priced.

Another thing to consider is used equipment. Seems there's usually a good number of rods and reels floating around out there, perhaps you can pick up something in your budget that will get the job done.

JC's right, in any instance you should be diligent about your maintenance. I'm not fanatical, but I do take time to rinse and dry my rod and reel each time I take them out for a spin. Doing so will save you some heartache in the future.

One of the reels I use in saltwater is an an Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock. I think I showed it to you when you were here. As a matter of fact, that 24" Red I caught was with the Battenkill. You might be able to see the reel in the photo I sent you.

In saltwater, the type and size of fish is usually the driving factor in what kind of reel you buy. It usually comes down to drag. How much drag do you need. The Battenkill is perfect for inshore fishing, I've caught reds, trout, flounder and jacks within and haven't had a lick of problem. The added bonus is that it is easy to clean. Some of my other reels are a pain to clean and that is why I don't fish them much. The Battenkill I use (9 to 12 weight line)retails at $159 so it won't break the bank.

As far as cleaning and lubricating my reels, I typically use a light coating of white lithium grease after I've washed the reel in warm soapy water. Haven't had any problems with rust yet.

    Cheers,
    Jake

I'm sorry JC...I just sort of consider myself the Mother Theresa of flyfishing, trying to help the poor angler. But I promise I'll stop!

Don't stop so easily Dave, you're right.
There's no need to break the bank just to catch a fish.
The fish don't know how much you spent

    Grand Poo-Bah,

Thank goodness that ?It AINT SO!!!? I knew Fly Fishing was too fine a sport to be high jacked by the Rockerfellows!

Even with that said it does get a little hard for me to defend the cheap equipment, let alone solicit advice from you guys in acquiring more. Secretly I would love to own the ?Good Stuff?. However honestly right now I feel that equipment is really only a small issue for me. Judging by my success as a fly fisherman thus far, even I know that something other than my equipment is lacking?.....like perhaps my skills!?!? Unlike a lot of you guys, equipment can?t bare very much of the blame here. I might as well get over the whole equipment thing. First of all, I am already fishing at the top of my current economic equipment pedestal anyway. Just like 99% you are!!! The thing I need at this stage I is simply to learn to fish better. Just like you guys did!! Let?s face it, Al Campbell could have taken a branch from a near by tree coupled it with the braided lent from his pocket and out fished me rod and all. The old saying, "It?s the Indian and not the arrow?, has a lot of truth to it. So don?t worry dear Grand one, as your number one pupil I?ll always try and get the best and most appropriate stuff I can. However at this stage of the game, this Indian needs to make the biggest investment in the Indian. I?m sure that my FAOL angler friends like PG Flyfisher, FlyTier37, and many others with whom I have fished would whole heartedly agree.

    Thanks,
    Allan
