Big horn/yellow stone flies

I need some big horn/yellowstone flies for around beggining of august.

The Bighorn in early August will have some PMDs coming off mid-morning and you will want to fish nymphs, emergers, duns and spinners. Grasshoppers, scuds, Ray Charles, pink sowbugs and any midge pattern will work. You might catch the beginning of the Black Caddis hatch around that time frame.

On the Yellowstone, you might find Salmon flies, small stoneflies, caddis, mayflies.

All in all, August is a pretty good month to fish around here, but it can get a little crowded.

You will also be driving by the Stillwater and Boulder Rivers, which are worth checking out.

If I were you I would check out some of the local fly shops web-sites. They normally keep an up and running list of what is going on and which patterns are producing the best. For the Yellowstone I would go to

For The Horn I can't give you a good shop as I have not been down there in a number of years. But there are several down there. By looking at these sites you will be able to know within a day or so what flies are producing and what flies are coming off. Ron

Hey Ron, i'm having some trouble on finding updated stuff also. I'm headin for the Horn on June 6th. I haven't been before mid August in the past and am not sure if the same patterns are applicable. Any help much appreciated. RC

You people and this sight are are far more than a fly flinger should be able to ask for.Thanks to ALL!

No matter what time of the year you hit the Bighorn, if you have some red, wine SJ worms, #18 grey Ray Charles, #16 & #18 orange scuds, #16 & 18 pink & natural sowbugs and your typical midge patterns, you will catch fish. Like Paul M said "think nymphing." If you are not catching fish with those flies, put on more lead.

I have fished all over the US and Canada. Never have a I caught some many fish on such a small selection of flies that I have on the Bighorn. I was there last week and had a great day and all I used was a #16 pink sowbug and a #20 black quill nymph.

Just to let all you kind folks know, I plan on following Al Campbell's instructions in "Saving Water" first. Thanks again for all the help. I think i've got most of the flies covered. The one's I don't have i will enjoy tying up this weekend.
