Thread: Scud Patterns

Here is a scud pattern that I use as a cricket for bream. It is a #8 Mustad scud hook tied with granny weave of orange and olive chennile with a grizzly hackle palmered over it for the legs and then a tan scud back pulled over the top. I don't trim the top. I just push the hackle over evenly and pull the scud back over that.

    Phil,

I honestly don't think the shellback even matters at times but then again it might add a little flash that could possibly make a difference at other times. That's why I have both kinds, if that makes any kind of sense at all. I like to use a rib for the reasons I stated in adding to the durability of the fly. I think real scuds (freshwater shrimp) have segments just like saltwater shrimp so I figure the rib couldn't hurt. I have no idea which has a better bite percentage for ribbed or unribbed scud patterns especially since I don't use unribbed scud patterns.

    Michael,

    Nice looking scud .
