Thread: Finished my St. Croix Avid!

  1. #1

Default Finished my St. Croix Avid!

And it casts VERY nicely! 9 ft 4 pc 5 wt.
Thanks to JC for recommending these rods and blanks -- seems like he's been enthused about them since the fly show in Denver last fall, and I can see why.

I'm particularly happy with how my thread color matched the reel seat! That's not a bubble in the epoxy on the stripping guide, it's a reflection.

    DanBob,

Great job, Bud. Yup, the thread color matches up nicely with the reel seat. That's the first thing that caught my eye. Very pretty rod.

Ya bringing that one to Lowell?

Looks great. Good choice of color. Feels so good to cast and catch a fish on a rod your built!

Nice job, beautiful rod. Looks like you went for the nice components, like the Struble reelseat and grip. Now go out and catch some fish!
P.S. What did you use to write on it and what did you coat the inscription and wraps with?

Thanks for the nice comments, folks!

Greg, I used an old fashioned (dip-type) fountain pen with Testor's silver model paint for the inscription.

As I was doing the second (final) coat of wrapping epoxy on the guides, my rod building instructor (Julie) at the local fly shop (Bob's in Loveland, CO) mixed up a 2nd batch of thinned-down epoxy, which I then applied over the inscription. I dont' remember the brand of the epoxy, it was not FlexCoat but something else for rod wrapping--whatever they use at the shop there. My 2nd rod that I built at Bob's -- I use the supplies they give me with no questions asked! (supplies are free there if you buy the blank from them!)
    ;~)

Ron -- you bet your bippy that rod is coming to Lowell -- along with my homebuilt Scott A2 3-weight!

    db,
Very nicely built. Great wraps and I especially like the green:deep red color combo.

    DanBob,

Bet you Bippy? Man, are you old enough to have watched Laugh-In? Haven't heard that in ages. (Yes, I'm old enough to have watched Laugh-In, way old enough.)
