Thread: More Unusual Fish

    Default More Unusual Fish

Flyfished an urban creek on Saturday.
Caught some unusual fish species...including a couple "mutts".
This is my first Saugeye (walleye/sauger hybrid) on a fly. I caught a walleye and 3 sauger out of the creek last year.

This fish looks more like a Redeye Bass than anything else...but it itsn't. It has the horizontal belly lines of a Kentucky Spotted Bass, which I've caught in this creek, but lacks the lateral line stripe. Also, KSB's tend to be more greenish than brownish. I've never heard of any smallmouth bass caught in this creek (and they don't have those belly lines)....so I'm not exactly sure what the parents might be....but its definitely a hybrid bass. All hybrid black bass in Missouri get lumped together with the "Meanmouth Bass" moniker, it seems.

First Shortnose Gar of the year:

    Goldeye:

I lost a nice catfish about a foot away from the net. Bummer.
But I did catch some nice Freshwater Drum again. The biggest was a new Flyrod Personal Best of 25.5":

Nice Drum. The only one I ever caught was out of Lake Huron. It wasn't as big as that one but felt like a school bus at first. Bulled dogged for what seemed like forever, and that was on (forgive me - younger foolish days) spinning tackle.

Dave, are you sure you weren't fishing in a witch's cauldron. Those are some unusual fish. Nice Drum!

Dennis, there sure seems to be a strange brew of genetic material coalescing in this creek. I'm a little worried that at some point I'll catch a fish / hobo hybrid. And it'll ask me for spare change as I release it!

Wow - those are some nasty teeth. You need kevlar gloves to unhook that bad boy.

The fly was carefully excised with forceps. It was bent up, though. I straightened it and kept fishing. About an hour later, I realized the hook had broken off at some point. Fly was still on. I wondered why it seemed I was missing some strikes. It was getting pretty dark, and I didn't bother to check. Rookie mistake.
