Default when is a vise a "press"?

When you are in a fly shop in Chile.

I found it so interesting and so funny.

My son took me to his fly shop in Santiago, Chile in February. The shop manager was very nice to us and could speak some English....I can only say a few words in Spanish.

Anyway, through my son's translation, I was asking the manager which vise he used. He had a hard time understanding. I think he finally got the gist of my question and reached down and put his Regal vise on the counter. In English, he said: "This is the "press" I use."

Of course, it makes all the sense in the world, but I had never heard a fly tying vise called a "press" before.

Maybe he heard "vise" as "press" when you questioned him, and repeated it?

No, We are friends now on Facebook. It is how they refer to the device we call a "vise".

A recent post on Facebook by the shop manager, talking about now having gotten a Jvice:

If perfect for that the knuckle is very useful for turning the flies... great press

It was in Spanish, but above was the translation

IN Spanish, he says "esta prensa". If you type that in a translator, it comes out as "the/this press".
