Bead size

I haven't used beads but I would like to start using them. What size beads go with what size hooks?
I realize I'm not good at asking a question, I can't figure out the words I need to use to ask what I need to know.

To get the right added weight using a bead you'd think that the bead Diameter would hopefully be your prime consideration. It's not the O.D. of the bead that will give you the concern as much as the way the hole in the bead is detailed. And yet another consideration is the bend shape in the particular hook you are using. Good luck.

While the guides are a reasonable starting point, the answer more often than not is 'the one that makes it looks right'. Very common to use oversize beads on some mayfly patterns for example. As Ray points out, the only limitation is can you get the bead on hook. After that, the choice is really yours.

if you can afford it, my suggestion is that you purchase tungsten beads as this is the densest bead material and will sink your fly down the fastest. best of luck
