Your parents taxes paid for the history teacher that taught you in high school.Did you tip him/her?
If you have a paid instructor they have been paid.If they take you streamside and coach you to fish they are an instuctor/ guide !!!
Tipping is a response to services recieved. The better the services the better the tip. I have never tipped an instructor nor recieved a tip as an instructor and I worked in the casinos of Vegas!

When I was a Flight Instructor I never "expected" gratuity for my services.

It depends if you had an experience over and above what you expected.

When I went open-water diving last time, it was a group with couple of Dive Masters. It ended up about 4:1 ratio. I've been diving before, but this was a different area, they supplied tanks, air, etc., and I knew more or less what to expect.

However, where he took us, what we saw, what we did was MUCH more than the average divers have posted on the Internet or said in conversation. I, and couple others, felt the additional experience was worth more than the $25 fee he charged.

Go with your heart. If you walked away with a 'Wow!', go ahead. It it was what you expected, they go with the agreed price.

Brought this post back to the top to tell you all thanks!!!
I have been asking advice for about 2 months now and I have finally got all my stuff.
I purchased a 5wt Sage Launch 9' and a Tioga reel.I listened to the advice of others on here that said 4 piece rods are not a problem.I also listened to everybody that said to cast as many rods as possible. After casting quite a few rods and deciding how much money to spend, this is where I arrived.
Then I also purchased a TFO 5wt 2piece as a back up with an Orvis Mid-arbor III.
Both reels are loaded with SA Mastery GPX WF.
At first I really couldn't tell the diff in the two rods. After fishing for quite a few days with each rod I now can really tell each rod has it's own personality.
I am amazed at how much action is in a 9' rod compared to what used back when I was growing up.Roll casting a long cast with the Sage Launch is way easier than with the TFO.But the TFO is better for ME for a finesse cast with dries.I have been catchin lots of fish with both rods and am just tickled to death with my choices of equipment due to the people of this website.
From the bottom of my heart....

    Thank you!!

    OH!!!!!
And thanks to all about the advice on tipping my casting instructor.
The best choice I made was to take classes even though I had the general idea of how to cast a flyrod.
I learned more in 2 hours than I ever could have in years by myself.

    Take care All.

    No Luck,

congrats on the purchases. I too have the Launch 9' 5wt. 4 pc. What a great tool/ Love it. And i have to agree about the instruction. Sometimes it is so much easier for someone who can watch you do things you can't see yourself do.

Sometimes, when I am not sure if I should tip or not I try and give the instructor/guide/friend/whatever a present like a nice fly or a book or a jar of homemade jam. Something like that is not so expensive as to embarass or so crass as money but it does show your appreciation.

Jalapeno peppers are an effective if not gentle laxative.
