    I much prefer the longer rods. A short rod to me is 8' 6", standard rod equals 9' and a 10' light weight 3 wt would be sweet for gills and crappie.

    I think you 5wt will be fine. Just like all other fly fishing the weight rod you use should be based on the size flies you intend to cast and not on the size fish you are targeting. It's a lot easier to cast small flies on a 5wt than larger flies on a 3wt.

    For crappie I use a six weight because I am using heavy weighted buggers or clousers in sz 6,4. For blue gills, I use a full-flexing 5wt.

    I use 3 wt and 5 wt most of the time. Fishing from the canoe most of the time so don't have to make long casts.
