I read your advice on another post about practicing casting with one's off hand, the left in my case. I've been working on that for a year or so and I think your idea is right on. Additionally, if anyone ever gets frustrated by trying to teach someone else how to double haul - they inexplicably seem so darned unco-ordinated - try the dh left handed. You talk about feeling like an idiot!

There are many valid reasons to learn how to cast well with your off hand.

    JC,

Absolutely! The reason I started looking into it was to find another way to deal with the hard wind coming at the right shoulder.

A few years ago I developed a serious shoulder problem in my right shoulder. As I am right handed, this made casting painful at best. I decided at that point that I had better learn to cast left handed. Even though my right shoulder has healed, I still practice left handed. I have started shooting my longbow left handed too.

Sometimes a side-arm cast with the 'off-hand' will place a fly perfectly in a place the normal cast can't do. Nothing like having choices!

A buddy of mine spent his life as a pro. jockey. Yes, he's not very far from the ground. In fact, came into contact with it often; several times he became 'un-horsed' mostly landing on his right shoulder. Pretty much screwed it up for fly casting. He taught himself to cast left handed, able to rip the DH with his right hand alright. My only problem is,,, I think he can out cast me now!!!
