    Interesting...

In one of Gierach's books, he writes about going to Newfoundland and tying up a ton of muddlers - making them as beautiful as he could.

When he gets there, the guide tells him that they're worthless. The heads are packed too tight and they won't sink.

Last summer there was a thread here or on a local board about which common or popular fly you had never caught a fish on. I realized that although I had a beautifully tied Muddler (given to me by a friend) I had never caught a fish on a Muddler. Next time out I tied it on and caught a couple of trout on it. They work if you put them in the water, will not catch anything in your flybox.

For several years I kinda' kept an eye out for his book, but never found one. Any one ever see a book dedicated to the lowly Muddler?
Not that I'm aware of Bill.
But guess it's not that unusual for even well know names in fly fishing to have planned books or videos that for whatever reason were never done.
I can think of at least two specific cases.

The only time a classic well-tied old pattern won't catch a trout is when that trout is 40 to 50 years old and has total recall!

When you can arrange your affairs to go fishing, forget all the signs, homilies, advice and folklore. JUST GO.
