Loop in the butt of the leader, and loop to loop connection. I have never had a problem with the butt of the leader cutting into the loop.

Are you using the handshake loop to attach the two? Here's a video demonstrating the method:

I cut them off and do a line to mono weld with a loop, then loop to loop the leader to it..makes a water proof end of fly line..

The coating did strip off the welded loop of one of my ( WF4F Rio ) lines after rather heavy, extended use with a thread furled leader. But it hasn't made any difference in the performance of the line and I see no reason to do anything about it.

Not sure if the Shorb loop of the thread furled leader had anything to do with the coating coming off the welded loop in the tip of the line, although I suspect that it does have a bit more "bite" than the butt loop on a mono or fluoro leader.

I've never had a factory loop break, but I have had factory loops crack pretty badly -- sometimes at the base of the loop where the doubled over loop meets the single line. Fortunately, it's pretty straightforward to whip a new loop in the end of the fly line. For me, the factory welded loops last a season or so of hard usage. Then I cut off the cracked factory loop and whip a new loop.

Then you are not trying hard enough. Like John, I've found the factory loops typically do not last more than a year or so, and then need to be replaced with whatever your favorite solution is. Even a butt section secured by nail not needs "refreshing" from time to time because the coating typically cracks at the knot.

I cut the loop off and use "leader Links". These small and medium plastic transition connectors work great. Fly line goes in the larger end and comes out the side. Tie a simple knot and pull the line back through the slot into the connector. Repeat the steps with your tapered leader through the other end. They work great, slide through eyelets without hanging up and I've never had one pull apart! Ron in Pa.
