Lastchance: This "Jay Renken" design is a variation of the one I posted. It has fewer legs (half as many) and the chenille body is palmered, like a bugger. It may catch just as many or more fish than the original, but it is still a variation in my book. I like the look of the original and believe in keeping a pattern simple when feasible.
Both flies use jighead hooks, though, although the variation recipe suggests that heavier ones be considered. For fly tackle, I think the lightest possible jighead is the best jighead unless size of hook is an issue.
Lastchance, are you by chance from Helena, Montana? They have a Last Chance Gulch and Last Chance Saloon there.

Interesting, and thanks.
my two favorite panfish flies that I tie are a stealth bomber and a red zebra midge. Id also pick up some neon poppers, they works amazing too.
