Water is low on this small stream. High temps so wet wading was the order of the day but there was lots of poison ivy around. Water was warm enough. Started working the pools around 4:30 p.m. I threw a tan 1" foam hopper and foam beetle, both with a orange indicator. Not much interest on this rig though I took a couple small browns on the hopper and missed a few strikes. Changed over to a gray drake but no action whatsoever. My fishing partner was throwing a golden stone nymph and dropper and was picking up some small fish. I tied on a red quill about 5:15 p.m. (that's why we headed out but I didn't really expect any action until about 7:30 p.m.) and had numerous strikes and takes in the calm pockets and slower currents on the seams. The trout are very leery and I had lots of short strikes. Still, they would take the fly very quickly for the most part. Later on about 7:00 p.m., I added a x-caddis emerger which also interested more than a few fish. Unfortunately, we had to leave early.
Forgot to add, the trout appear to be more sensitive to the drift than normal. A little drag will put them down.
