Whats your favorite hackle gauge and why? Do you prefer something store bought or home made? I've tried a few and like the proportion's of the Tiemco model. It has one post for standard dry flies and one for parachute's.

I just use the hook in my vise. I had one some time ago, I think it was black and yellow. Not sure of the brand.

Happiness is wading boots that never have a chance to dry out.
I like Griffin's; fairly inexpensive and it seems true. If I'm tying parachutes, I just go one size larger.

The two I prefer are, Dette gauge and a DuBois, both are no longer made. I also use a Griffin which is attached to my vise stem.
I also use the hook a a measurement. I hardly ever tie Catskill style, but when I do, the hackle is bent up from the hook and I look at how far the fibres reach below the ga. If I am tyin parachutes, the hackle has to reach from the post to just to the start of the bend (my preference). I don't wish yet another tool on by vise or on the bench.
I use my eyes. When they finally go, it won't matter what gauge I use because I won't be able to wrap the hackle anyway.

Griffin's gauge works but you will find yourself adjusting the size to your own preference. The hook works as well, when there's nothing else around, but gauge is more convenient when measuring for more than one size of hackle. Tool is in the "optional but useful" category of fly tying tools. YMMV.
I now use the Whiting hackle gauge.
Trout don't speak Latin.
I use the Dette gauge or wrap the hackle on the hook and see the length.
Whiting is all I use, if I need to use a Hackle Guage .
