A fly reel?
Sorry, I could not help my self.
A question for you...is it machined, or cast?

I'm guessing some sort of Martin. It looks pretty simillar to some of the ones I used to have.
TT.
Without looking back, I'm thinking a JW Young ... maybe a 1500 series
I think bigfin56 may have been correct. Here is a picture of a J W Young 1500 series spool (from eBay).

Have to agree with BobbyG. Pattern doesn't match.

May be a later Young model, I've never handled one.
I will say the perforation pattern on WWFF's spool and the ebayYoung 1500 are different.
When you can arrange your affairs to go fishing, forget all the signs, homilies, advice and folklore. JUST GO.
1) It appears to be a spool that never had a handle (where are the marks?).
2) It is a rim control design. Does anyone know when this became popular? IMO it is not too old if it has that feature.
3) The perforation pattern is interesting and I don't recall ever seeing it before.
I'm going to say it's a spool from a Shakespeare "Speedex" multiplier. A Young design, produced while Shakespeare owned the name and company.
wcglass
I have to agree with wcglass. I Googled speedex reel and got a picture of one on the fiberglass flyrodder website. The Speedex pictured there is also a rim control, with the identical vent pattern on the spool. It also doesn't have a place to attach an offset handle. It's a multiplier reel and the handle operates out of the center of the spool.
I think you guys are right..... thanks for the help
