    Default Biggest Fly Fishing Myths

    Hello all,

What are some of the biggest Fly Fishing myths perpetuated today? What techniques or theories have come to be used with no good basis at all, or what sayings make you snicker? This should be fun!

    Mine is:

Why should I learn to double haul, and cast far and well? Most of the trout I catch are closer than 30ft!

For trout and most warm water fly fishing you need a disc drag reel. For most of us the only time we ever see the backing, is when we first spool it on.

myth--when using a furled leader, you "cant" make "trick" casts.

truth--curve casts, slack line casts, etc. can be done, and quite successfully, with furled leaders...it just takes mre effort and concentration.

    and to answer yours:

the longer and better you can cast, the more options you have available to you. just because the majority of your catches are done within 30' doesnt mean longer casts with accuracy cant produce more...

Myth... You need to spend a lot of $$$ to catch fish. You can buy a low end rod and reel combo with a band-aid box full of flys and catch plenty of fish. A $1,000 bamboo rod is not going to make a poor fisherman a good fisherman.

Salt water fishing is easy because of the veracious appetite of the species.

To catch big fish, you have to use big flies!

Fly Fishing Myth. FAOL is boring and dull. Most members don't know the first thing about fly fishing. If you ask an question you are lucky to get an answer, let alone one that fits.

    I don't think so.

Gosh, here is what I get a lot of:
"oh, you fly fish, where do yo go to find trout around here?"

Or, upon seeing me casting "so that's how you fish in the mountains".
