My two favorite panfish rods are an Orvis Clearwater four-weight, nine foot, midflex and a Cabela's Clearcreek two weight. seven foot rod. Both handle panfish well and I've even landed some pretty good-sized bass on each. I've never felt that expensive fly rods were necessary for my fishing success. 8T

I dont have blue gill or crappie around here...me so sad ....I use a 10ft 6wt for my lite duty such as peacocks and cichlids...can never be too sure a tarpon wont slam the fly...last time I used foam spiders the baby tarpon took over

I only have 3 fly rods. and my lightest is a 8-1/2' 5 wt. This is what I use for panfish, with size 12-10 flies for bluegills, and sz. 8 for crappie.

I have 3 rods I use for panfish -- 2wt, 4wt, & 6wt -- which one I use mainly depends on just how windy it is and what size/wight of fly I am using that day. I primarily use flies from a size 10 down to size 16, with the 12's and 14's being the majority. There are also a couple of lakes that I go to that I tend to catch an abundance of catfish in the 18" or a little larger class. I haven't used the 2wt at those lakes. For crappie I tend to use larger flies in the sizes 6 and 8 often with a little weight also, so I bump the rod up to the 4wt at least.

If I were starting over or could only have one rod, I would get a 8 - 8'6" graphite 5 wt. and a reel with a decent disk drag system on it. I would also like a reel with enough line capacity to add a couple of 100 yds. of backing and hope someday I will need it. I would get a decent weight forward line and being only partially seduced by furled leaders I would get a good tapered leader and some 2#, 4# & 6# tippet material (I don't understand X's that well).
