I've gotten a lot of mileage from the Orvis Fly Pattern Index by John Harder and Poul Jorgensen's Modern Trout Flies. I've had these books for 25-30 years and I still use them today as my primary pattern references.

I think any good book on tying soft hackles would do anybody good when the fishing gets tough I always turn to soft hackles and in twenty some odd years fly fishing it has rarely let me down. Just my two cents worth
