    Default Red Lodge, Montana options?

    Hello everyone.

I will be in Red Lodge, Montana during the week of July 11 for a family rebellion, I mean reunion. Another family member and I will have a couple of days to fish. Probably will have one FULL DAY and another HALF DAY to try to harrass some fish.

Any suggestions for where to try our luck? On the full day of fishing we won't mind a little bit of a drive to get to good water. The half day would probably require somewhere a little closer to Red Lodge.

We are both reasonably experienced fly fishers so can wade fish some fairly technical water. We will also have float tubes and/or pontoons so a stint on one of the alpine lakes would be a nice option. I would love to have a chance to catch a Grayling. Is that a possibility?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I don't have anything specific for you but the Yellowstone is near as are several lakes. Here is a nice map of public fishing sites in Montana if you haven't seen this already.

Hopefully someone chimes in with some more specific suggestions.

Was in Red Lodge about 5 years ago. There is a neat little fly shop there.
    I would check with them.

There is also a restaurant there that had the best chili rellenos I've ever eaten!
When you can arrange your affairs to go fishing, forget all the signs, homilies, advice and folklore. JUST GO.

The closest Graying are in Grebb Lake in the park (YBP) it's a hike in, 4 miles is think, but flat walking. The walk in was the first place I ever saw Sand Hill Cranes. They were walking along feeding and their backs are about the same color as deer, then one stuck it's head up. Hello!
You can fish from shore don't need your tube. It's a fun thing to do.
    Hugs,

also if you're up for a short drive - the Bighorn River is about 2 hours due east of you...you can go to the boat ramp below the dam, walk 5 minutes down stream to "The lunch counter" which is a big shallows and you'll stay busy with big rainbows and browns all day - I can give you more info if you're interested.
Thank God for my wife, the midge nymph and those hapless Iowa Hawkeyes!

Consider the nearby Stillwater River that is a tributary of the Yellowstone. Good access and well marked. Do not take the Stillwater name literally, it is a high gradient stream in places that can really flow.

The Stillwater or Rock Creek would be good options. Some good fishing in the Beartooths as well, but it doesnt sound like you have time for that. My fishing bud Andy Szofran runs a guide operation out of Red Lodge if you need one. Cheers.

The Stillwater and Rock Creek are still pretty high. Actually had a poor fellow drownd in the Stillwater last weekend. (He wasn't fishing - Went in after his dog.)
Big Horn is running high flows close to 10,000 cfs. So floating is the only way to go down there. I here the fishing is good though.
