Bob, hi. ICQ is an internet chat protocol. You probably don't have an ICQ number and you don't need one to participate in FAOL as it doesn't use ICQ at all. Here's some more info:

I think the real definition has something to do with "Instant Messaging" but most of the members here put our birthday or at least the year we were born in that space to give folks an idea of what vintage person we are hanging around with.

I could be wrong, as I have been a lot wronger about alot more important stuff.

I haven't used ICQ in years, we use the ICQ area in our profile to but our birth date.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad to hear it's not "inane childish questions" asked or my number would be rather high.

ICQ was a program which allowed you to enter into a chat environment with others with that software, similar to Instant Messenger. The downfall of ICQ was, they didn't secure ICQ user numbers and many viruses were passed through their program.

I used it quite a bit when I first got online in 1996, but stopped after AOL's Instant Messenger was made available to the general population.

As a sideline... One of the cooler programs I used after ICQ was called Roger Wilco. A "walkie-talkie" program developed to allow users to connect "on top of" their internet dial-up connection so they could speak to each other by voice, while still playing games or surfing. The best part was, it was equivelant to talking long distance without paying for the call.

Ahh, the good ol' days.... lol.
