I just got my first bamboo rod. It is a South Bend #59 marked for HGH line. I it is a heavy rod, I am planning to you use it for farm pond bass fishing.
What line weight/brand do you recommend?

I will try that, thanks.

A large reel might also help. This may balance the rod out somewhat for you. Good fishing.

Definitely a 7. I had a #24, which was the same rod with just fancier compoents, and it throws a lot of line. It's medium-action, tough as nails. Check the ferrules closely for splits, though, every so often. It's a good bass rod, as mentioned, and weighted with a heavier reel is a lot easier to manage for long periods.

It depends really. I have 3 SB 59s. Two 8.5s and one 9 footer. The 9 footer likes WF 7 and the 8.5 footers like DT 6. An idea to lighten up the rod in both weight and maybe even in line size would be to remove the old varnish and revarnish it with some modern polyurethane.
idabelangler, my SB #59 is a ninefooter. I will try the 7wt like you suggest. I like the idea of making the rod lighter but I think I will do that later. I kinda hate to refinish the rod because it is like new.
