Filter Fly
The filter fly uses a smoked cigarette filter as dubbing for the abdomen and thorax.
Smoking is an unhealthy habbit practiced by many. The inovater, Jack Gartside, of the filter fly was a smoker who succumed to lung cancer. Members of my own family who were smokers have also passed prematurely in great part due to their cigarette habbits and their resulting heart disease and lung cancer. I do not smoke cigarettes nor allow smoking in my home or vehicles.
However, I do smoke an occasional cigar outdoors. (about a half dozen per year) For this swap, I hollowed out the end of a cigar and placed a cigarette filter inside. This gave the filter the authentic tobacco stain that Jack Gartside felt was important for this fly.
I like using low budget materials. However, IMHO, nobody should smoke so they can tie this fly. I decided to tie this fly noting that there was more than a bit of irony in its selection.
