Thread: The "ONE" fly...

Yep, I'd use it but not exclusively. There is some fun trying to dial in what the fish would like to see.

Three Flies for the Crappie-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Bass-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Steelheaders doomed to die,
One for the Trout Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Rivers where the riffles lie.
One fly to rule them all, One fly to find them,
One fly to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Rivers where the riffles lie.

Sorry, geeking out there and it's a slow day at work....

If the ONE existed, what would it do to the fly tying industry? Obviously, there would still be a need for the materials used for construction of the ONE. But what about all the other minutiae of fly tying? Would that go away, or constrict significantly, leaving those who choose another path fewer options?

Maybe from a different angle or as a related thought:

There are magazines, with editiors and writers, and web publications like blogs and web sites with advertisers and publishers, books with authors, publishing houses with employees, all kinds of folks whose businesses depend on the vast variety of flies and fly tying for their livelyhoods. Would they gladly accept the ONE for what it is? Would they allow the ONE to peacefully exist, or would there be a concerted effort to discredit it and thus save their jobs? Do they have the power to quash the ONE before it destroys their income stream?

We've all witnessed the power of advertising in this industry. Would the industry suffer the ONE to survive?

Buddy, that might be true if there weren't a bunch of folks who wanted to invent an even better fly. One not only catches fish all the time, but prevents LDRs, doesn't snag as easily, if prettier (catches more fishers), etc... In short, even there WAS an ultimate fly, I'm not so sure that it would be recognized as such.

Most likely the "one" would get banned, just like scents are banned on fly fishing waters, and just like how some flies were banned in the UK on some streams for being "too effective" (the butcher comes to mind).

The perfect bait is in your back yard, and all you need is a shovel....they're free. If it was all about the perfect most effective bait....we'd still be spinfishing with crawlers

I have said fly, and it is concocted with a hook, thread, some pheasant tail, copper wire, fur, and a partridge feather. I can't seem to keep fish off of it! and yes, I enjoy tying a pattern that works! I also enjoy sharing the tying with others who are interested.

Seriously, it ain't as much the fly as it is the fisherman/woman.

Maybe the one fly can be found in this old Castwell article: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/arti.../cst062005.php
