One would have to believe that the record will be brought back stateside soon enough anyway. Some of those guys fishing the CA trout lakes have been coming close for years. There was one foul hooked a couple years back that would have been a world record by around 3 lbs. Only a matter of time...
I believe the final determination was that it was a legal zone to fish it, as long as an angler does not stop or anchor. My understanding is that he and witnesses confirmed that he never stopped his boat nor anchored as he trolled through that area, with a bluegill.
It's a huge fish! although an invasive species to my new england waters, still a nice catch even if he did chuck bait.

I have followed the hunt for the next world record for years. If anyone would like an interesting read on some of the people that have been pursuing the record there is a book titled "Sowbelly: The Obsessive Quest for the World-Record Largemouth Bass", by Monte Burke.
My personal hope is that some kid out with his dad on one of those California lakes hooks and lands a 23+ pounder on a Zebco33 combo tossing a rubber worm.
