Coot Feathers

I have recently aquired a former tiers storage chest God rest his soul. In it are Coot feathers, What patterns are they used in if any ???

Collars on soft hackle flies. And, the wing flight feathers can be used for the upright wings on wets.

They make wonderful large wet flies. Doc Watson sent me some a few years back in a fly swap.

I use coot feathers for several flies. They make a neat collar on Prince Nymph
steelhead Flies. Mainly I use them for flies for warmwater fish, but I have also caught trout on them. One of my most successful coot flies is very simple. Hook, #10, Wet. Take a coot feather tie in at bend by the tip. Wrap forward. Add coot feathers until hook is covered - whip finish, etc. It usually takes 3 feathers to get a good bushy fly. Below is a picture of another coot fly that I enjoy using for gills.

Word of caution. If you want coot feathers you need to shoot the bird yourself. You can't seel them or anything. They are protected under the same law as flamigos.
