I am wondering if anyone uses a spead sheet or data base to keep track of all of thier tying materials and if so would they share it with me so I stop buying duplicate stuff. If I buy any more olive chinel my great grandchildren will still have some to use

    Dave,
Welcome from a Canton, OH boy. My old favorite flyshop was in your neck of the woods, "Books and Hooks" in Girard closed this year (sadly)...Scott, Bud, Larry & crew are great folks. I just talked to Scott today. Did you ever stop there?

    Dave-

I believe maintaining a database inventory of fly tying materials must be one of the phases really obsessive folks (like me) go through in their fly fishing maturation.

What finally triggered it with me was when I accidentally discovered that I'd just purchased the 3rd package of the exact same type and color of dubbing, and hadn't even yet opened the first package. Ah well.

Taxon, Did organizing your materials help avoid buying duplicate materials? I could just see myself in a new fly shop thinking I really need that dubbing/bead/whatever only to get home and see that I've had the stuff for years. Unless I had my list, I'm not sure it would help.

I failed to mention that I've been working on a fly fishing application and I'll need to add this to my todo list.

Wow, I though I was organized because I have all my materials sorted and I know where they are all located.

    PaulM-
Yes, in combination with having an inventory I can reference when I'm in a fly shop. Initially I put all my materials in a spreadsheet. Then I imported them into a database. Then I downloaded them into a database on my Pocket PC, which I always carry with me, and where I now maintain the inventory.
