The secret to catching the most trout on a given day is to remember that they are wary critters that will flee for cover as soon as they sense the possibility of danger (excluding hatchery fish, of course). Think of yourself as a hunter of trout and you'll do well. You must be stealthy in your approach, be as invisible as possible, and make sure that your first cast is your best. Once they see you or are frightened by a poor presentation, the game is over and they won.

Walked into our favorite stream to fish before dark. Had hat 'headlights' on. Looked down at the water and saw 3-20+ inch browns. Put the light on them and they didn't move.
I think the "skiddishness" is much over-rated.
