For those of you familiar with George Grant (the rest of you should be familiar with his flies, they are amazing), he passed away yesterday at the age of 102.
He will be missed.

I love George Grant's flies. He was a true Montana original! His two books: "The Master Fly Weaver" and Montana Trout Flies" record the history of Montana tying. I will cherish my copies. Grant was the founder of the Big Hole River Foundation and spent his remaining days in conservation efforts to protect that river. A humble man who should have received a lot more attention than he did.
May he fish the Big Hole in peace and slip quietly around his favorite bend in the morning mist.
My condolences to his family.

Those of you at all familiar with FAOL know a great deal about Mr. Grant. Search brings 87 references to his name. There is a lot of fly and tying information well worth looking into including some work by the wonderful Al Campbell.

For those flyfishers interested, there is a permanent display of George's flies, as well as some others, in Butte, Montana at the visitors center just off of the interstate. It is well worth your time to stop in and take a look at this display. I stopped in to see George a few months ago, and talked with him about fishing the Big Hole. He talked about his black creeper flies, a wonderful fly, and signed my books in exchange for a case of Coke and a case of Gatorade. He did a lot for the Big Hole and flyfishing conservation in general. He'll be missed.
