That didn't take long....here it is...

    Spyware Removers
    Terry, Lawrenceburg, KY

Q: What is (in your opinion) the best spyware remover?

    AdAware
    lavasoft.de

    Spybot
    safer-networking.org

    Microsoft Antispyware
    microsoft.com/spyware

    Firefox
    mozilla.org

    Spyware database
    spywareguide.com

    Spyware Info
    spywareinfo.com

Unfortunately spyware has become so tenacious that there?s no spyware remover that can remove all spyware. Nor can any of the spyware scanners we?ve tried find 100% of spyware infections. I recommend all XP users install AdAware, Spybot, and Microsoft?s Antispyware. They?re free and do a decent job in concert. But the most important thing to do is not to get infected in the first place. Turn on spybot?s immunization features and Microsoft Antispyware?s Real Time Protection. They help block infections.

Changing your behavior is the most important way you can prevent spyware. Stop using Internet Explorer unless a site requires it (and you trust the site). Firefox is much less prone to spyware infections. Use it. Don?t click yes when a site wants to install software. Don?t download and install software unless you?re sure it doesn?t contain spyware. You can check for known infestations at spywareguide.com. Finally, read up on spyware at Spyware Info.com

I don't know a lot about fly fishing (see some of my posts but I do know about computer systems (over 30 years of experience).

Most commercial anti-virus and spyware systems go way to far with what they do to your machine. Many of the free systems are better and allow you more choices for how you want to manage things.

Adaware is very good and I agree with Ducksterman on everything he says. I use Mozilla exclusively at home. The only sites that I've found require Internet Explorer are some corporate web sites.

I also use Thunderbird for my email (I have DSL and its easy to set up). I stay away from Outlook or Outlook Express since they seem to be vulnerable to macro viruses.

I also use a free anti-virus package called "AntiVir". It comes from Germany and is free. You go on-line to get frequent updates.

Check Majorgeeks.com for free software for anti spyware and AntiVir.

Glad you got your machine straightened out and good luck. Now let's get back to fishing. I have a date with some striped bass over at Breezy Point, NY for tomorrow.
