I don't think this is bluegill. The bluegill that come out of this creek look like this:

The bluegill and this fish have a different shape to them. Also, the unidentified fish has a mouth that opens bigger than a bluegill's. I'm leaning toward either a green sunfish or a hybrid between multiple bream species. I don't think it is a Redear/Shellcracker because they are shaped the same as a bluegill, but they have the reddish orange border around the black on their gill cover.

As for the bug, I looked it up and it definitely is a dragonfly nymph. Thanks for helping me on that.

I don't know about the bug...or the sunfish. I found this nice identification sequence but I could not narrow it down. Maybe you can.

I got it down to Lepomis, but beyond that it got a little out of focus.

The thumbnail is a green sunfish.

To Hi Jack this back to bait for trapping raccoons, might I be so bold as to suggest a stale, jelly doughnut? That seems to work pretty darned well is is usually a bit less likely to imprison the local kitty population.

I vote for Green Sunfish or a Green x ? hybrid.

Bluegill possibly hybridized with a rock bass(red eyes)........(is that possible?).

Dragonfly nymph...................hmmmmm. I need to add some legs to my wooley buggers. Beadchain eyed wooley bugger with legs....close enough to a dragonfly nymph for me. The pond I fish has a bunch of dragonflies.

Well, according to the Tennessee ID website, it looks like a Redbreast to me. It had more of an orange color to it that other redder Redbreasts I have caught in swampy water before. It doesn't look like a Green Sunfish to me from the picture posted. I don't think it is a hybrid with a Rock bass because I have never heard of a rock bass being caught around here. Thanks for the help.

Here's a little more hijack, sorry. I trapped coon for years, and always had the best luck using red table grapes for bait. for Squirrels, I used Jif super chunky peanut butter. for weasels, chicken blood, for skunks, raw eggs in a little dish, for 'Yotes, "guaranteed in heat female coyote urine from Hawbaker's trapping supplies........ModocDan

We call them fish "sunfish" around here, and that's what we call a dragonfly nymph.
Sunfish are great filetted, rolled in cornmeal, and fried on a big 'ol skillet over the campfire for breakfast...

Yep the nymph looks like a dragon. The fish is a redbreast sunfish.
