I don't understand this...
Do you mean that because the fish are huge, or people don't know how to fish, or the air at 60degrees latitude is too thin for the rods...
Two out of the three may certainly be true.
I think that folks, in a combat fishing zone, like the Russian River, underestimate the power of a sockeye in fast running water in a very social fishing event... In these areas, you cannot let the fish run!!! So, improperly horsing the fish in can definitely break a rod.
There is no question that the fly rod is way more effective at legally catching sockeye that conventional gear. Many non-fly-fishers will buy a fly rod to take advantage of the feel of a fly rod but have absolutely no idea how to properly work it.
But, I just don't understand why there would be more broken rods in Alaska than anywhere else???/
