There s often a $ exchange location at the border and there is always one at the airport. I have crossed from Ontario to the US this season at 3 different spots, and asked the usual questions. The questions stopped, or became much more congenial when I responded to the question, "Where are you going/Where have you been", with the 2-part answer, "FLYFISHING in ..........." Get that phrase in there somewhere is my recommendation ? and have a good time.

SheTies- great to hear from you. You're from BC aren't you? We're staying in Fernie despite the new rod fees. So we'll use that as a jumping off point. We've asked our guide for a float on the Elk, but will see if Mother Nature cooperates. We'd scheduled one of those last year but the water was just to dangerous at that time. Can't complain, he guided us into an area in Alberta instead and we caught the biggest trout of our lives (so far!).

spek, greg, philly= I appreciate your input.

Knowing how things change, I won't even ask you what's fishing well right now.

You don't need your passport to get into Canada. You need it to get back into the United States. Just got back from Ontario two weeks ago. Crossing into Canada, I was asked where I was from, where I was going, what was the purpose of my visit, how long I was going to stay, and the usual litany of things you have to pay duty on if you bring too much over. I've been going to Canada for 16 years now and have yet to be asked for a picture ID.

I think you've been lucky. I've seen the tourists who get stuck at the border trying to get into Canada crossing into Alberta with only a drivers license for ID. They give them a very hard time. They may make it in, but only after serious delays. Just bring a passport or birth certificate and don't risk it.

    Flyangler,

Enjoy your trip up here once again. While you're enjoying your trip up this way, it looks like I'll finally be moving back to the States. I guess I'll have to start making trips up to fish as well.

If you're an American crossing the border into Canada make very certain that you don't have an OUI (or DWI) on your record. You will NOT be allowed in. I was stunned when I heard that. I didn't have either an OUI or DWI..but one member of a previous party did. NO entry into Canada. Just a "heads up"....

Thanks Flyangler. Yes I live in BC, I'm glad you're getting another chance to check out some of our fishing. I'm taking just over a week off for a quick trip into Vernon and then onto 100 mile for a nice week of fishing and relaxing at one of the little cabin "resorts".

When are you planning on being in BC, maybe we'll be able to all get together for coffee or something.

Dahema= yeah, I noticed that in the State Department's blurb. Serious bidness, ain't it? Also, I think somebody else here ran afoul of the rule about bringing a kid without permission of the other parent.

SheTies= I'd love that. The second of our two weeks is in Fernie, something like the 24th to the 31st. The first of the two, they'll be seeing a lot of us at the Crowsnest Cafe in Blairmore. Or is that end of town Coleman? How far is Fernie from Vernon?

My son does lots of bushwhacking and hiking in bear country so I got him a Bearspray for his birthday last week . I must admit it was partly for my peace of mind as much as for his safety . He had to be present to sign for it and show his ID . I believe the flyshop owner said you have to be 19 or older . Cost $45.00 plus an optional $10.00 holster . He and I have run into quite a few black bear over the years and never had a problem but still they can be dangerous . I use to carry a 30/30 with me but never needed it .
For God's sake, Don't Quote me! I'm Probably making this crap up!

Wonder what the shelf life of a bearspray is. I also wonder if you have to hit them in the face (assuming a steady hand, good aim and no unfavorable winds) or if it's more of a fogging kind of thing.

This is what you do with excess anxious energy before a much anticipated trip.
