    Default Squealing reel

Does anyone know how, or if I should lubricate my reel? and if so with what lubricant? Right now my Ross CLA tends to make a squealing noise when I pull line out, its not a terrible sound, but it is noticable. Also I think that it is effecting my drag some times when pulling line out the drag seems to grab on to the line a little harder than it should effectively making my drag quite sparatic (sp?). Anyways any comments would be appreciated.

Yes, it needs to be lubed. If it's squealing, i'd say you're over due.

I like using Quantum grease and oil. Depending on the application.

    Yep, call or email Ross.

It may have some dirt or residue in the drag and may need a washing.

The CLA drag is impregnated delrin. DO NOT lube it unless you prefer it to free-spool.

Take off the spool, see if there are any rocks, etc around the edges, wash those off. Do not lube the drag surfaces, but you really should keep the center spindle lubed. I kinda like cotton picker spindle grease, but I am not sure they have made any in 50 years or so.

Best bet would be to call Ross and ask them what they recommend, and where.

Ross Reels is explicit in their literature that their reels should not be lubricated. Instructions for cleaning the reels were included with it and are available on the Ross Reels website.

    www.rossreels.com/technical_help/current.cfm

As suggested give Ross an email or phone call and ask what they suggest.

I had a ross Cimmaron with similar symptoms. I disassembled the reel. There was some dirty muck between the drag place at the reel frame. I think I had dropped the end of the rod and reel into some muddy bottom while releasing a fish. Cleaned it up and the reel worked fine.

    Try
    info@rossreels.com

They have an excellent service department and stand behind their products even after the warrenty period . They might even send you a free hat.

Do not lubricate. Most of my Ross's have sealed bearings anyway.

I'd also suggest you give Ross' Customer Service a call and ask an expert. They may have you send it back to be fixed and it will be fixed. Good-luck!

I never saw a reel you didn't have to lube something on it. It looks like Ross has that worked out.

Although sealed bearings have been known to leak.

I guess they use bronze bushings on the cheaper models.
