    Hi,

I've not gone steelheading, but looking at some of these patterns I suspect that some of the New Zealand patterns would work a treat. I would suggest a Red Setter or a Yellow Fuzzy Wuzzy.

    Red Setter:

Interesting fly! Could you tell me about the barbless hook? Did you file it?

Nope, I simply smashed the barb.

Here is a tip for all you egg sucking leach users. If you like the same color in just a woolly bugger and as an egg sucking leach, just carry some egg yarn and when tying on the woolly bugger of choice, just place the tip of the egg yarn through the knot prior to tightening it down, then when you tighten it down just trim the yarn on each side about the size you would want the egg to be. When it gets wet it will pull back over the fly slightly and look just like a regular egg sucking leach. This way, you only tie the woolly buggers in the sizes and colors you want to fish, carry a variety of egg yarn colors, and assemble the ESL color pattern you want on the stream. This also gives you more versatility as you are not limited to having only the color patterns on hand (black bugger with pink egg suddenly becomes black bugger that can use any color egg yarn you have) allowing you to match what ever seems to be producing best. This does limit you only in that you cannot use a loop attachment at the fly. Though I have not tried it with other Egg Sucking patterns I imagine it would work for most.

Loren, that's a great idea for the San Juan's. I've been doing very well with the standard tie but I like the girth on your pattern. Maybe I can try it this weekend.
