Thread: Bamboo rod building classes.

  1. #1

    Default Bamboo rod building classes.

I was hoping to get some reccomendations on bamboo rod building classses. I am interesed in a class from someone who is a fairly well-established maker(not necessarily "famous") where at the end of the class I would come away with completed rod. I am not aware of anyone in my area, so I understand that I would have to travel to the maker.

    Thanks

A friend of mine completed a class last summer by J. D. Wagner of Ohio. He has since finished 4 rods. He loved the classes and reccomends them to anyone that wants to get into cane rods...

    J. D. Wagner has the following web site...look for his class info towards the end of the page

    Here's another, Harry Boyd.

    One on one instruction.

    $600

There are still others, just do a google search.

Also, note that most instructon does not include finishing the rod, that you'll do at home.

    Good luck with your search!

    Here ya go:

    http://www.genuinebellinger.com/

Our classes are $1200 (half of which can later be applied towards the purchase of a piece of our equipment). You'll get to learn how to build rods from Daryll Whitehead and Chet Croco (and some minor instruction from me). Our September class is full (we only allow 2 people per class), and we don't have a class in July (we'll be at the Metolious bamboo fair), but other than that I believe all our other class dates are open. Let me know if you need any more info, or just give Chet a call at the shop.

    Regards,
    Joe Martin

    Lots of great options.

There's also a class offered by the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, although the deadline is next week. It's team taught by a handful of makers right on the museum grounds on the Willowemoc.

Sorry I missed this post earlier (I was busy teaching my last rodmaking class!). My classes are six days and it is one of the very few where you actually COMPLETE the rod in the class. I am a full-time career bamboo rod maker. If you would like more recommendations than the quotes on my site, then I could provide you with the contact for each of the four students in my last class. I put on about six classes a year and have had students travel internationally to study here. Here's a link to the "Classes" page of my site if you're interested http://www.oysterbamboo.com/bamboo-fly- ... asses.html Let me know if you have any further questions!
