Is HDG a 6wt line?
Is HDG a 6wt line?
Here you go Gramps...................
Silk Lines were sized by the diameter of the end-middle-end (double taper silk line) or end-middle (half of a double taper silk line)
I-(0.022" dia)
H-(0.025" dia) 2 Wt
G-(0.030" dia) 3 Wt
F-(0.035" dia) 4 Wt
E-(0.040" dia) 5 Wt
D-(0.045" dia) 6 Wt
C-(0.050" dia) 7 Wt
B-(0.055" dia) 8 Wt
A-(0.060" dia) 9 Wt
So a HDH, would be a 6 weight DT with the ends being 0.025" diameter, while the main line is 0.045" diameter.
A HEH would have been a 5 weight DT, while a HFH would have been a 4 weight DT.
The main thing to remember, the middle letter (in the letter grouping) is the weight of the line, while the end letters (in the letter grouping) are just the end taper diameters.
While the modern PVC weight system, weigh the same, there diameter is larger diameter so the line will float on the water surface, because of weight displacement (specific gravity) to the water's specific gravity (1.0).
The silk lines floated, by the same principle, as your tapered leaders (and tippets) float, water tension.
