    Default Seven foot fly rods

I am looking for a short fly rod for my kids first rod. I am looking for a seven footer or so in a 6 wt. They are 7 and 9 yrs old. So I don't want a heavy, long rod that will make them tired after a few casts. I figure I need at least a 6 wt due to trying to catch trout in all of the salmon. I know they are going to hook a red or silver while trying to get a trout. Not that they would mind. lol Thanks

My kids started with a 9 foot rod. The youngest was 5 at the time (two years ago). They all continue to use the 9 foot as well as other rods, some shorter(I have a greater selection now, in weights and lengths). I would go with a 8' or 8'6" if you are concerned. I have found that with a well balanced rod, along with good technique, they do not tire easily.

I think HMG make a decent spin/fly concerter in that size.

Thanks for the replies. I had both of them lpay with my 9' rods. They didn't like them due to them being to long. So I thought I would look for a shorter rod. I have seen a few 8' rods, I might pick one of them up to see how they like that.

YOU are right stopping a 9 ft rod when you are only 4 ft tall is a major problem

Teach them well for they will be taking you fishing soon enough.

A 7' rod may be too short for a youngster.
Longer rods will keep the casts further away from small faces.
Safety glasses are in order also.
The simpler the outfit, the more skill it takes to manage it, and the more pleasure one gets in his achievements.

My son is 7. Being all boy and not too gentle with anything I set him up with an Eagle Claw Featherlight fiberglass rod, 7.5' 6#. He seems to handle it well, good size for him, and alot more sturdy than graphite. Since his favorite color is yellow, he thinks it cool.

My youngest started off with my 7'6 4wt St Croix Pro Graph.
He is 12 now and still likes to use it!

    Thanks for the replies.

I looked at the site you gave me Al. I like the looks of it. I think I will go that rout for now.

They both love to fish as much as I do. Now they want to "fish like dad". I can't even sneak away any more without getting myself into trouble with them. I love it when they land a fish, that smile on them puts me on top of the world.
