Thread: What's with Line color

    Default What's with Line color

While reading an article about the new WF lines, I noticed the different colors of orange, yellow, and green. Could somebody tell me the significance of color and the effects upon trout? If there is a difference, then what would be the ideal color?

Some people operate with the theory that your leader and tippet keep bright lines from spooking fish.
Some people use somber colors instead.
Some people operate with the theory that bright lines are easier to see and seeing your string is advantageous to line control on the water.
Having choices is a good thing.

If your fishing during daylight and using a floating line, color really doesn't matter. A fish will likely see the silhouette of the line against the sky and not the color. Thus the idea of tippets. If you're using a sinking line, that's a different story. Nice dark colors, or colors likely to match the water conditions and bottom color. Colored floating lines do help you see them, but mostly when I'm casting, I tend to look at my target, not the line. As well I never take my eyes off that fool fly once it hits the water! LOL

Fished the Duck River last June with weighted nymph's. Yellow fly line orange furled leader and 4 to 5' of 4X floroucarbon tippit! Caught more trout than on any previous trip!! Red/Orange will disappear at about 4' so the section of the leader I could see made a very nice strike indicator.

I keep my lines cleaned on a regular bases and dressed with muslin? when fishing wets or nymphs.
