Thread: New Fly Line

    Default New Fly Line

I have been doing quite a bit of research and decided to try a quality line to replace the line that came with my rod and reel package. After much pondering I went with Rio fly line. Was very impressed with the improvement of my casting but what surprised me is how different it made the action of my rod feel. Can anyone explain this?

There are allowable tolerances within a given line weight of perhaps as much as 10%, plus front taper and belly length all play a part in how a particular line casts. Not all 5 wt lines cast the same on all 5 wt rods.
I hardly ever respond to line questions on bb's because I think people just don't want to hear it but believe me line brand and taper do make a difference. And that does not mean the most expencive line in the store.

I will second exactly what Buzz states here.

If possible I like to test cast a line prior to
    purchase.

ps: bit off post topic, but I have had some
lines for several years and they are still in
fine shape. Keep them dressed & cleaned and they will last twenty years or more...

I have to agree with Steve and Buzz and would add that some of that "better" performance is psychosomatic suggestion. A bit like your car running better after a wash. There ARE certain expectations after installing a "quality" line and sometimes the mind "manufactures" a realization of those expectations.

PS: Will someone PLEASE explain to me what I just wrote?

Maybe your new line is a different taper or a different weight than the replaced line....?

If buy changing the action you mean slowing it down, I beleive you. The guy at my local fly shop said rio designs there lines like a half weight higher then they rate them, which would slow your rod down. But this is what some guy told me.
