I have never seen a level line out of the box so realize that that is where I am coming from. But could one not successfully overline with a level line?

Seems like a three weight rod with a five weight level line on it would be good for casting in tight spots where one could not get a lot of line out of the tip top? Wouldn't it load up fairly well?

Of course there is always the tomato trellis if my idea didn't work.

Wednesday Caster, what brand/weight are these level lines? How old are they?

I hate to throw things away. Thanks all for good reasons not to toss something perfectly good.
I do a camping trip once a year for some warm water fishn'. Will now set up a couple rod/reels w/level lines just for this purpose. Very good idea.

Lines I believe were SA about 3 years old (when I got back into the water) and 5,6&7#.

I use level lines to make 'shooting' tapers, for long-distance casting behind spillways. Use a 10-15' section tied to some very small flyline, or running line. They work great!

I used a level line for the first 10 years that I flyfished.

Ok, so know I know better.

They fish Ok, don't load as well in short distance situations or shoot as well as WF.
Not as delicate in presentation as WF or DT.

    BUT

They cast "OK" and you can use them in the water.

You can always use them on the lawn or parking lot for casting practice

Level lines do not cast worth a dam by themselves!

    - Original purpose was to use for short line nymph fishing and get a better drift because the narrow thin running line had less resistance to the current yielding a better drag free dead drift.

    - Later they were used with heavy Shooting Heads to maximize casting distance.

    - They also found use with sink tip heads for the same reason as the Original purpose.

    - Great Lakes steelheaders started using them with lots of leader lead that cast them far by the weight just pulling the running line out. Purpose here also the same as the Original, but with the many hang ups caused by the heavy weight and craggy river bottoms, the cheap running lines were more dispensable when coating seperations soon appeared from pulling on the hang ups with heavier tippets.
